Welcome

A free creative resource for designers, decorators & interior painters.

If you are new to this Paint Some Colour blog then welcome. We have readers from around globe; from Australia to India, Japan and the U.S.A, as well as here at home in the U.K.

I've worked in the design industry for well over 25 years & my approach to colour selection is practical, creative and systematic.
My personal way of choosing colour is based on an analytical engagement with the subject and the creation of a visual story, supported by a unique library of images and materials collected over the years.

The last place I look to find the colour of my dreams is on a paint chart. It's not that I never go there, I do. It's just that the manufacturers paint chart is the final tool in the decision making process. I use them only to qualify my choices.

I'm also deeply interested in the historical evolution and the manufacturing of paint; its application and range of finish, from dead matt through to ultra gloss. The way light plays on a decorated surface, is as important as the very colour itself.

I work my craft professionally with PLAIN ENGLISH & BRITISH STANDARD CUPBOARD MAKERS
Showrooms in Hoxton Square, Marylebone London and Suffolk. England.

I also offer a COLOUR CONSULTANCY sevice

Please feel free to ask me about colour, paint, materials or decorating.

Other than that, please enjoy.

Dear Mark,

Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the course this week. I learnt so much in a stimulating and very organised environment. It was a pleasure to step out if my life and have 3 days off and learn something so fun and new.
I feel ready to tackle some furniture and am itching to do so!

It's always a pleasure hanging out with someone passionate about their field of expertise, so thank you.

I would very much like to be kept in the loop re other courses to further my knowledge.

Have a great weekend.

Best,

Rebecca.

Hi Mark
Gosh I have been so busy at work so sorry for not responding sooner. Wish I was still on the course - I really enjoyed it.
I am off to Hythe this weekend to do lots of painting - well actually preparation. I went to the London Decorators shop in Norwood and stocked up on some stuff.
Thank you for your kind offer of help and I would love to come on another course.
Regards
Dani

Dear Mark

Thank you so much for putting this course together. I can't tell you how much I have enjoyed the last 3 days. It was so so full of practical information and a great balance of theory and preparation and painting. I think we covered a huge amount, and I just simply adored doing it! I really, really loved it and have loads of plans of putting it all into practise, on top of doing my desk. I am very proud of my magazine rack and can't wait to move onto the desk. I long to get lots more experience.

I will definitely keep in touch and I am sure I will bug you for information, but above all will recommend you to others. You must have gone to alot work to write the manual which I am going through. So much planning goes into these things. It was great fun too working with Martina and Victoria.

Hopefully, you have opened the door to many things for me which is wonderful.

I am going to Ray Munns this afternoon and have just written my long list!
Thanks so much for the paint and the beautiful brush.

It has been fantastic meeting you!

With best wishes, Vivi.

Hi Mark

I have tried to post the pictures but I think you are the only one
that can do it. Sorry I have never used a blog! I am not even sure how
to write a comment.

I wanted to write the following:

Mark's three day course has renewed my interest in interior
decoration. I have always found the subject fascinating and over the
years I have had a lot of practice in my own house. Being self taught
though has meant that I have very often stumbled across bad practices
and also very bad products. In his course Mark has been extremely
generous in sharing his knowledge and has taken the headache out of
decorating! I have learnt that preparation is key and with the right
products and tools it is the secret for a great finish and less work.
I have enjoyed working with all these new Eco paints Mark is
understandably so fond of and appreciated their value both in terms of
final result and equally importantly for ease of use (water to thin
and water to clean, how much easier could this be... plus no horrible smell
induced headaches). I have learnt a lot about different types of
sanding papers, masking tapes and fillers (no more polyfiller for me
thank you very much)! which, although may sound boring matters, I have
totally changed the way I work and  have also made me less scared of
making a mistake because I now know how to easily correct it. We also
talked at length about colour and light and have enjoyed been more
creative and daring with colour without being stuck to prefixed colour
charts. The colour of my four panel doors started as Farrow and Ball
Parma Grey and ended up a more smokey version of it after adding umber
green and raw umber. To recap: Mark is a fountain of knowledge not
only in decoration and painting but also in furniture restoration and
I am thankful for him letting us dig into his gold mine of tips. I
have thoroughly enjoyed the course, the fun and the food from the
Black Bird opposite the studio!

Have a good Easter. Seaside must be great with this sunny hot day.

Speak soon

Martina
